The University of Alabama Professional Staff Assembly
Resolution on Diversity and Inclusion 2017
WHEREAS all humans possess unique, rich cultural histories, backgrounds and personal experiences deserving of universal respect and acceptance;
WHEREAS diversity includes but is not limited to differences in race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical and/or mental capabilities, and religious beliefs;
WHEREAS a rich array of diversity exists within the campus community of students, faculty and staff at The University of Alabama, and the University’s increasingly diverse student body continues to bring a range of backgrounds, perspectives, and needs to our campus;
WHEREAS consistent with a commitment to freedom of expression and conscience, all members of The University of Alabama community, including students, faculty and staff, have the right to express their beliefs;
WHEREAS The University of Alabama Strategic Plan has outlined as one of four goals for our University to enrich our learning and work environment by providing an accepting, inclusive community that attracts and supports a diverse faculty, staff and student body;
WHEREAS President Stuart Bell reaffirmed the commitment to this goal in his 2016 Fall Campus Assembly that hostile, threatening, or racist actions, language, or posts will not be tolerated;
WHEREAS the realization of the goals of the University can most effectively be realized through the commitment of every level and unit of the University, which the Professional Staff Assembly is positioned to promote and support;
WHEREAS the Professional Staff Assembly at the University of Alabama has a history of supporting the advancement of diversity at our University including through our 2013 Resolution to Administration in support of Advancing Diversity at The University of Alabama;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Professional Staff Assembly at The University of Alabama reaffirms our support to a diverse campus environment that provides an inclusive community for all. We endeavor to support, promote, and advance inclusion on our campus through our programming, work, and outreach.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Professional Staff at The University of Alabama desires to be an active participant in advancing a culture of inclusivity at The University of Alabama. We are ready to support and engage in conversations and actions that support and further a culture of inclusivity. We support and encourage actions to ensure the rights of all individuals in our campus community including but not limited to any group, regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical and/or mental capabilities, and religious beliefs.
FURTHERMORE we call upon our campus administrators to facilitate an expedient search for the new position of Vice President and Associate Provost for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
FURTHERMORE we call upon all members of our entire campus community to individually and collectively support and advance a culture of inclusivity at The University of Alabama.
